Adrenal insufficiency results from multiple conditions that impair the ability of the adrenal glands to make stress hormones that are required for life. It can result from disease of the adrenal glands, pituitary gland or hypothalamus, and is most commonly a result of the use of glucocorticoid (steroid) therapy or opioids. An acute adrenal crisis is a life-threatening emergency that must be quickly recognized and promptly treated.  Treatment of primary adrenal insufficiency consists of physiologic replacement of glucocorticoids mineralocorticoids, and sometimes adrenal androgens.
