Research advances and national clinical trials in pediatric oncology have resulted in dramatic improvements in the outcomes for these children with the overall long-term survival rate now exceeding 80%. Proper assessment, diagnosis, and referral for these patients requires accurate knowledge at the primary care entry point and collaboration with care providers at tertiary care regional centers. Focus on the most common diagnostic categories, initial presentations, as well as history, assessment, and diagnostic procedures. General treatment modalities, new developments in targeted and individualized therapies, and complications of treatment will be discussed, as well as long-term follow-up requirements and potential sequalae.
